Arab Documentary Photo Programme Call & Workshops
The Arab Fund for Art and Culture (AFAC) and the Prince Claus Fund (PCF), in partnership with the Magnum Foundation (MF) in New York, USA, are delighted to announce the second cycle of the Arab Documentary Photography Programme (ADPP). The ADPP is a programme jointly funded by AFAC and Prince Claus Fund that is running from 2014 to 2016, targeting creative documentary photographers in the Arab region. The second call for proposals is now open and a jurors’ committee comprised of Arab and international experts will select up to 10 grantees to receive financial and professional support to complete their proposed photography projects. The grantees are expected to dedicate sufficient time to their projects for the duration of the grant period and will be required to hand over the agreed-upon deliverables on time. The focus of the Arab Documentary Photography Program is to support compelling non-stereotypical and unconventional visual documentation of important social issues and narratives relevant to the Arab region. In recognition of the image’s power to document, educate and advocate, the ADPP will also explore ways by which such a body of work can reach out to wider audiences and engage with them in compelling and impactful ways. Photographers may propose to work in a range of nonfiction narrative styles, from classic documentary photography to more experimental visual storytelling, and may propose to include audio and video elements. ADPP’s objectives are: 1. To raise the level of creative documentary photography in the Arab region; 2. To train photographers and expand their approaches to visual storytelling; 3. To share strong visual narratives from the Arab region regionally and internationally; and 4. To explore wider access to documentary photography and a more active engagement with its audiences The tentative schedule for the second cycleis as follows: – February 1st: Open the call for proposals; – April 1st: Close call – May 14th: Announcement of the selected grantees – June 15-18th: First Workshop – Dec 7-11th: Second Workshop We cordially invite all interested and eligible photographers to apply to this programme. MF seeks to develop new strategies for increased exposure and impact of documentary photographers in an ever-changing media landscape. The photographers of Magnum Photos founded the independent, non-profit Magnum Foundation in 2007 to carry forward Magnum’s high standards for long-form documentary storytelling in the 21st century. About AFAC AFAC envisions a thriving Arab art and cultural scene, one that is confident in its expression, open to dialogue, accessible to all and sustained locally by committed patrons. Two fundamental principles guide AFAC’s mode of work: transparency in the grant giving process and independence through a diversity of funding sources.
