The first public call for the Artists at Risk-Residencies is now open and welcomes applications from art practitioners at risk of grievous suppression of their freedom of expression, persecution or politically motivated threats to their basic freedoms.
Artists, writers, curators, critics and scholars are often the targets of politically motivated threats and persecution in a great many parts of the world. Perpetuum Mobile initiated Artists at Risk, a new institution perched at the crossroads of human rights and the arts, to provide a platform and network to support these art practitioners in their time of need. This encompasses facilitating a safe exit from their countries of origin, assistance in the procurement of travel documents, providing legal assistance, and matching artists with so-called Artists at Risk-Safe Havens and residencies in the Artists at Risk network.
Artists at Risk-Residencies enable practitioners to take a “breather” from their home country or to use the programme as a “stepping stone” to re-orientate their professional lives. Artists at Risk-Safe Haven residencies usually include an apartment or studio, a monthly living grant, travel, visa and insurance costs, and a limited budget for a production and legal costs. Each residency, however, offers different conditions. Some residencies can support families.
Artists at Risk welcomes applications from all over the world. Submissions are possible in all major languages. However, applications in English are preferred, as this allows the processing of applications to progress more swiftly.
In order to apply, applicants should download and complete the application form and send it to the address [email protected] with the following documents:
- An artistic portfolio and/or a CV;
- A sample of artistic works (can also be provided in the form of links, pictures, etc);
- A list of awards and/or grants and prizes – including dates and names of the organisations giving out each award.
The first deadline is 15 June 2017. Nevertheless, organisers accept urgent applications at any time.
An international jury will select Artists at Risk-Residents to be granted short- or long-term residencies.
