CUSP – Regional tour of forum theater workshops in Morocco

As part of the CUSP – Culture for Inclusive and Sainstable Peace project. Racines aisbl organized a series of forum theater workshops in three regions in Morocco (Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma, Souss-Massa and Casablanca-Settat), in partnership with local associations, in particular the association Tamaynut (Tiznit), The forum association of rif women (Al Hoceima) and IFAAP “Training and Support Initiatives for Local Actors” (Casablanca).

The workshops were organized between January and April 2021. Each workshop brought together around twenty women, artists and artisans. They were an opportunity to identify the difficulties that women artists / artisans face on a daily basis; promote expression and questioning of the issues of gender equality, access to professions, the visibility of women artists / artisans and their works, copyright, gender stereotypes, etc; create a space for debate and exchange of views on the issues addressed; coordinate the discussions and ideas proposed by the women participating in the workshop.

Two researchers attended and observed the workshops from the beginning until the end. Individual interviews were conducted with participating women. Two film directors documented the workshops and followed the women in their workplace, according to a previously written script.

The data collected during these workshops will serve as a basis for writing both a practical guide for women artists and artisans in Morocco and a book that relays the stories of women participating in the workshops and offers a sociological analysis of the phenomenon of insidious violence in Morocco, towards women. A documentary film on the same theme will be produced.

The Goethe-Institut is launching a project to support choreographic creations in the MENA region. It proposes to select eight artists from and based in the region. Each artist will be creating a choreographic project centred on notions of autonomy and body politics. The Goethe-Institut provides financial support for the productions and accompanies artists from conception to implementation.

CONCEPT

“Un /Controlled Gestures?” invites to question “kafala (ةلافك)”, a traditional concept in some Arab countries. While “kafala” has different forms and characteristics within Arab countries, it always implies both a dimension of control and protection above others. What is kafala today? Can it guarantee the integrity and dignity of the other? Or is it a permissive access to the integrity of others? Moreover, how is this sophisticated system amplified in our contemporary societies? How do other patterns of control and use of others occur in the current socio-political sphere?

Dance, as the essentially bodily art, offers stages to echo these states of mind and help to redraw and invent new ways of sensing, new configurations and new vocabularies in the new performative body.

Young artists are invited to question the concepts of autonomy and self-determination, submission and limitations of the body. They create and present new performances which artistically reflect on the public discourse and the difficult question of the “power of disposition”.

The project allows artists to take part in a theoretical workshop about kafala and two residencies to develop new works relating to the topic. (Location: Egypt, Morocco)

Objectives of the program

– Reflecting theoretically and philosophically about the power of disposition and body politics – Connecting and networking young choreographers and artists from the region – Acquisition of new skills – Mutual appreciation in a frame of critical and constructive sphere – (Co)producing dance pieces – Diffusing dance productions and connecting dance creators and audiences via performances

in the MENA region, in Germany and Europe – Facilitating transnational cooperation.

1 WHAT WE OFFER

Advice and Networking The eight participants are advised and accompanied by two dance experts during the creative process: Mrs Nedjma Hadj Benchelabi, Performing Arts Curator and Dramaturge based in Brussels, Mrs Anna Mülter, Dance Curator at the Sophiensaele Berlin / Tanztage Berlin and tanzhaus nrw Düsseldorf

The selected participants will meet physically three times and will have time during these residencies to develop their creative processes and exchange with other artists from the region. Travel and accommodation costs during the three working periods will be funded by the Goethe-Institut.

Production Grant The Goethe-Institut will award a grant (around € 2.000) to each selected artist to produce the performance. Participants are allowed to find co-production funds but have to inform the Goethe- Institut about them first.

For an Observatory of Freedom of Association and Artistic and Cultural Expression

Attacks on freedoms are increasing in Europe and among our close neighbours. A associated Euro-Mediterranean and African network of activists, civil actors and researchers is creating an observatory to assess and report violations and failures to respect the rights of association and cultural and artistic expression.

Attacks on freedoms are increasing in Europe and among our close neighbours. A associated Euro-Mediterranean and African network of activists, civil actors and researchers is creating an observatory to assess and report violations and failures to respect the rights of association and cultural and artistic expression.

At the beginning of 2019, the situation of guarantees of civil liberties is worrying. Barriers to freedom of association and expression are more common. Directly or more indirectly, public authorities appear to want to place limits on the position of cultural and artistic civil society in the public space. Afraid of independent acts and speech? Secular? Critical? Of opening up society to all diversities? … the perpetrators of these attacks are united in their desire to muzzle the democratic forces of their society. Artists and cultural actors are not immune from these censorship strategies.

For example, on December 26, 2018, the Court of First Instance of Casablanca decided on the dissolution of the Association Racines for reasons that remain unclear. This decision aims to put an end to the activities of an association known to be a major player in Moroccan civil society, acting for freedom of expression, citizenship, emancipation and cultural diversity.

The object of this observatory is to:

  1. gather information on all attacks directed at the fields of freedom of association and expression of artistic and cultural groups, both openly democratic and secular, at international and, specifically, Euro-Mediterranean and African levels;
  2. regularly publish reports by independent teams composed of jurists, artists and cultural professionals reporting on the details of attacks by the authorities;
  3. bring to the attention of international public opinion not only the diverse range of these attacks, but also the evolution of public policies that allow, if not encourage, them.

The protection of freedom of association and expression can only be guaranteed by an international public opinion that is documented and mobilized.

Additionally, State of Artistic Freedom 2019 calls for accountability for these violations.

The State of Artistic Freedom 2019 illuminates a troubling and growing method of violating freedom of artistic expression—counter-terrorism legislation. In 2018, 19 artist were imprisoned and 10 were detained under the guise of counter-terrorism. Freemuse’s research concludes that nine countries (Belarus, Egypt, Georgia, Israel, Nicaragua, Russia, Spain, Turkey and the United States) are found to have used anti-terrorism and anti-extremism legislation and measures against artists in 2018.
