Call for applications: “artistic strategies in psychiatry” residency

The Van Abbemuseum and the GGzE (Mental Health Care Institute Eindhoven) invite national and international artists or artist groups to apply for the “Artistic strategies in psychiatry” Artist in Residence Programme.
During the residency, the artists are asked to develop and carry out site-specific projects of high artistic quality and using innovative approaches; the projects must have a concrete, positive and lasting impact, and must relate to one or more of the following objectives: reducing prejudice in society against mental health care and psychiatric illnesses; dealing with the specific needs and problems of clients, former clients, their relatives or friends; promoting the inclusion of clients or former clients in society; improving the living conditions and environment of clients or former clients; improving the working conditions and environment at the GGzE; and making a concrete, positive and lasting impact on the institution, its clients or its staff.
The residency consists of three phases: a research phase, where the selected artists are invited to visit Eindhoven (the Netherlands) for a three- to five-day research trip in spring 2017; a residency phase, where they will work on site for two months in October and November 2017; and a presentation phase, where the project will be presented by the artists. The location and date of the presentation will depend on the requirements of the project.
The invited artists will be provided with accommodation by Van Abbemuseum, as well as a studio to work in on site at the GGzE, in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the Mental Health Care Institute, its clients and its staff. They will also receive a stipend of €7,000 for participation in the whole programme, intended to cover all living expenses. An operational budget of up to €5,000 will be provided for the realisation of the project, its documentation, communication and presentation. Travel expenses will be covered up to an amount of €2,000.
National or international artists or artist groups (maximum of five people) working in the fields of socially engaged art, community art, participatory art, art and science, social design, or other related fields are welcome to apply. Students are not permitted to apply. There is no age limit.
To apply, please send your application dossier in English or Dutch in a single .pdf file (max 5 MB) to [email protected]. This should consist of:
- The completed application form;
- A text (max 4,000 characters/one A4 page) outlining the applicant’s interest, ideas or concepts for their projects. The artists must convey possible working methods, approaches, motivations or aims, but not a specific project proposal;
- A portfolio of a maximum of five previous artistic projects.
The submission deadline is 31 December 2016, 23:59 CET.
