In the context of Saint George’s Day on 23 April and the related Catalonian tradition of the Day of Books and Roses, when people exchange flowers, gifts and literature, Jiwar (Barcelona International Residence for Artists and Researchers in Urban Creativity) is celebrating a month devoted to writing, by hosting four writers and developing a special programme centred around writing and literature.

Of the four writers selected to take part in Jiwar, one from an emerging country will be granted a full-stipend residency.

This writing grant includes hosting at the Jiwar residency, in a study room with many shared spaces (gallery, library, garden, well-equipped kitchen) and plentiful facilities such as Wi-Fi and regular full cleaning services, support and coordination from the Jiwar team, information on cultural events in Barcelona (depending on the resident’s interests), and contact with local artists and Barcelona-based artistic networks. Please note that this grant does not include travel costs or meals.

This call is open to writers of all genres: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, prose, theatre and so on.

The language used for communication during the residency will be English, but the selected writers can write in any language.

During the residency, the four writers will take part in a public reading session, where they will be invited to read samples of their work. They will meet with Barcelona-based writers and publishers, and visit the main Catalan institutions. A writing-jam session, open to the public, will be held at Jiwar. If interested, writers will be invited to share their work with the students of the high schools in and around Jiwar’s neighbourhood.

To apply, please send an email to [email protected] and include the following:

  • A short CV;
  • A sample of recent work representative of the candidate’s writing work. If it is in a language other than English, the best option would be to have at least one sample translated into English, Spanish or French;
  • A short description of the project that the candidate intends to develop during the residency;
  • The languages spoken by the candidate.

The submission deadline is 15 February 2017.
