Spazju Kreattiv and Valletta 2018 jointly invite creatives from all fields to apply for an immersive Artist-in-Residence programme (AiR) based on the Maltese island of Gozo, during Valletta’s tenure of European Capital of Culture 2018.
The residency programme aims to enrich cultural diversity within the national creative scene and is designed to maximise cultural immersion within the island and its communities. Links with Malta and Valletta are possible; however, the artist in residence should seek to collaborate as much as possible with communities from Gozo.
Submitted projects should explore the three main topics emphasised during the European Capital of Culture year:
- “Future Baroque”, which is about an extravagant and theatrical way of life, full of colours, ornamentation, and exaggerated gestures and actions;
- “Voyages”, as Malta has always been a melting pot of different cultures thanks to its harbours and strategic geographic location – a place with an ancient heritage, Arabic roots, standing alongside a European past and present;
- “Island Lives” – what does island life really mean? We may be able to drive across the whole of Malta in a single morning, but that doesn’t mean we’ve seen it all.
AiR applications will be considered in relation to the overarching strategic visions of Spazju Kreattiv and Valletta 2018. However, priority will be given to those applicants who:
- Work directly and actively with local communities and cultures;
- Are willing to interact productively with local creatives;
- Are based in the Mediterranean region, particularly North Africa and the Arab region;
- Work with creative forms that are currently emerging or underrepresented on Malta and Gozo.
Residencies are for the duration of two to three weeks for residencies and projects taking place between August 2017 and December 2018.
The deadline for applications is 31 March 2017
Once the projects have been selected, the successful applicants will be notified on 19 May 2017.
