Call for applications: sud ecriture film writing workshop

The Sud Ecriture training workshops are launching a call for applications to take part in the 33rd international workshop for rewriting first or second feature films. This workshop is open to five feature-length fiction projects from the following geographical areas: the Maghreb, the Middle East (Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria) and Sub-Saharan Africa. The workshop will take place as two one-week sessions, under the mentorship of a scriptwriter and assisted by the pedagogical committee of Sud Ecriture. The workshop will give scriptwriters the chance to work in depth on their script, with the active involvement of all participants. • A script in dialogue form;
• A synopsis (1-2 pages);
• A statement of intent (1-2 pages);
• The writer’s CV;
• An excerpt from a short or feature film already made (optional).

Created in 1997 with the support of the Centre National du Cinéma (France) and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, the Sud Ecriture workshops aim to support the emergence of talented filmmakers from Southern countries, to support scripts that could potentially be vehicles for attractive films, to be a venue for exchanges between scriptwriters from different backgrounds and cultures, and to help projects to find artistic and financial partners.

“The work that was carried out during the workshop allowed me to develop my script in a way that would never have happened otherwise. (…) It is the first time I have witnessed such in-depth and thorough rewriting. Spending a whole day discussing my screenplay with this kind of mentorship allowed me to develop it considerably. Sud Ecriture is an exceptional experience,” remarks Lebanon’s Cynthia Kasparian, who participated in workshop number 31.

Nearly half of the films that took part in Sud Ecriture have been completed, several screenplays have won awards, while others have received development grants. Among the raft of recent films that have been developed via Sud Ecriture is Hedi by Tunisian director Mohamed Ben Attia (2016 Berlin International Film Festival).
